 Background – The Problem MAPS (Maine Adoption Placement Service) has been a licensed adoption agency since 1977. In the process of obtaining accreditation by the Council on Accreditation, we were required to have a functional database to meet the many accreditation standards, including information about children placed, post-placement reports, humanitarian aid projects, as well as many other statistics. Our first attempt in linking five offices to one database was cumbersome at best, requiring complex synchronization processes, which caused several problems. What we really needed was a user friendly system that did not take so much effort, was flexible and provided all of our input and output requirements. Current Day – The Solution After much research, MAPS came to the realization that “off the shelf” products were not going to work for us. Irris Technologies came up with a solution for us to fully automate these functions. Today we have a web based system in place and are very pleased with it. AIRS (Adoption Information and Reporting System) is an extremely easy system for users to understand. Productivity is up, our training costs have been kept to a minimum and most importantly - it is very flexible and user friendly. AIRS provides us with secure access from any of our locations, including remote dial-up users, with the built-in ability to download data and reports to a run-time version of Access on local workstations (provided the user has security.) The system is built in such a way to accommodate growth and customization - much of which we can do ourselves! Many of the post placement tasks are automated and the reports meet our regulatory requirements, as well as provide us with valuable statistical information.
